THE RISE AND FALL OF A MEDELLIN DRUG PILOT
Andrew Barnes was a young man who had everything: a British public school education;
a father who was head of security for casinos in the Bahamas; a beautiful wife from
a rich family - even his own private airline. And all this at the age of 21.
So why did he turn to crime and become a full-time drug smuggler; the first man to
run cocaine into the United States for the Medellin Cartel?
Incredibly, Barnes carried on his drug-running activities for years, completely unsuspected
by the authorities. It was only when he believed - quite wrongly as it turned
out - that he was about to be betrayed by fellow smugglers under arrest, that he
decided to turn himself in to the Drug Enforcement Agency. Even then they were
reluctant to believe his story.
And what a story it was! Barnes' adventures read like the most far-out Hollywood
adventure. It was while he was awaiting trial and sentence that he sought out William
Norris and told all. Perhaps from vanity, perhaps as a warning to others who might
be tempted to follow in his footsteps. Who knows? It is a salutary story, and
one that will keep the reader on the edge of his seat.
